Big Game Fish Still Abound In Florida Keys Waters
Do you like to fish? Can you imagine going out on the crystal clear blue waters of the Florida Keys and landing a 683.9 pound fish? Wow! That’s what happened April 3rd just off shore of Marathon on the “Mystique” owned by Katherine MacMillan and captained by Billy Rabito Jr. It was caught on an electric sport fishing reel and is believed to be the largest swordfish ever landed off the Florida Keys!
The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) didn’t put the 683 pound swordfish into the record books citing that “assistance” was received by using the electric reel. The largest fish caught off Florida waters on a manual reel was a 612 fish caught in 1978.
The big one was reeled in just a few days after angler Fred Beshara landed 520-pound broadbill off Islamorada with help from a Daiwa Dendoh MP3000 electric power-assist reel.
Clearly the big game sport fish that has drawn celebrated sportsmen like Zane Grey and Ernest Hemingway, US presidents and anglers from all over the world still swim in the warm offshore waters of the Florida Keys.
Whether you want to catch some dolphin (mahi mahi) or snapper for dinner or a world class sport fish, the Florida Keys are the place to get your name into the record books!
