I just received my 2011 Property tax notices in the mail yesterday. They are called TRIM notices and are sent out by the property appraisers office. There are 2 components that make up the calculation for the property tax amount. The property value (less exemptions) times the mileage rate equals what you owe. The TRIM notice reflects the revised value of the property and I am happy to say that I think the appraisers office here in Monroe County did just fine with what I saw.
The other part of the equation, the mileage rate, is still being worked through in budget workshops at the municipalities. Historically in the middle Keys, the city of Marathon and the city of Key Colony Beach have done an outstanding job keeping that rate low, especially in Key Colony Beach. From what I have seen and heard from these workshops, the cities are trying to keep taxes low here in the middle Keys.
There are a lot of moving parts that make up a tax bill. Budgets for schools, mosquito board, county and municipalities are all lumped together. The cries of the sleeping giant for tax relief, (that's the general populace) have reached the ears of the budget masters at all levels. This is a good thing. Perhaps we can hope it reaches the federal level.....the eternal optimist that I am :)
Best to you and yours.............Paul
